Ingredients

Steak:

1 lb (454 grams) ground beef
1/4 c (30 grams) breadcrumbs
1 large Egg
2 tsp (10 ml) Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp (5 ml) onion powder
1/2 tsp (2.5 ml) garlic salt
1/2 tsp (2.5 ml) mustard powder
1/4 tsp (1.25 ml) kosher salt
lots fresh ground black pepper, or to taste
1 tbsp (15 ml) cooking oil, for searing beef patties

Mushroom Gravy:

3 tbsp (30 grams) butter
8 oz (227 grams) mushrooms, sliced
1 medium onion, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4-1/2 c (30-60 grams) flour, depending on how thick you like your gravy
3 c (720 ml) broth (beef, chicken, or vegetable)
kosher salt or sea salt, or to taste
black pepper to taste

How to make Best Salisbury Steak Recipe with Mushroom-Onion Gravy

Step 1: Add the steak ingredients (beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic salt, mustard powder, salt, and black pepper) in a large bowl. Mix to combine, then make into 4 individual oval patties.

Step 2: Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the patties into the skillet. Brown both sides for about a minute or two. When done, take the patties out of the pan.

Step 3: In the same pan with the juices. Add the mushrooms and onion and cook for about 10 minutes over medium-high heat until golden and the liquid from the mushrooms evaporated.

Step 4: Add the flour into the pan, stirring to get rid of the lumps. Pour in around half to a cup of beef stock. And whisk until combined.

Step 5: Adjust the heat to high, then gradually pour in the rest of the broth, whisking to incorporate. Adjust the seasoning according to taste.

Step 6: When the gravy begins to boil, adjust the heat to low. Often stirring, simmer the gravy for about 5 to 10 minutes or until it begins to thicken.

Step 7: Place the Salisbury steak patties back in the pan and continue to cook for about 5 to 10 minutes until the patties are cooked to your liking. Make sure to spoon the gravy over the steaks. Adjust the seasoning according to taste.

Step 8: When done, serve the steaks with the mushroom sauce over rice, pasta, or mashed potatoes. Enjoy!
