Crock Pot Great Northern Beans

by Sheryl

This is my comfort food! I always cook this recipe every time I feel sad or frustrated. Don’t get me wrong though, this is not only a sad food but you can always prepare and serve this daily. I just prefer to prepare and cook it on my bad days. This exact recipe was the dish my mom always served when I was a kid. She taught me the recipe so every time I miss home, this Crockpot Great Northern Beans somehow ease my homesickness. Okay, enough with the drama. Going back to the recipe, feel free to tweak it a little. For example, if wish to have a much thicker sauce, try removing about a cup the liquid to make it thicker when you add the sugar. I hope you all like this recipe. Enjoy!

Ingredients

1 16 oz package dried northern beans
3 4 meaty ham hock shank or meaty ham bone (about 1 1/2 lbs)
1 small onion diced water enough to cover beans salt & pepper to taste
1/3 cup light brown sugar

How to make Crock Pot Great Northern Beans

Step 1: Clean the beans by removing any pebbles with it. Wash and rinse the beans with cold water.

Step 2: In a medium crockpot, add in the ham shanks hocks, salt, pepper, onion, and the rinsed beans.

Step 3: Pour enough water to cover the beans about 2 inches. (6 to 8 cups would be fine.)

Step 4: Place the crockpot on the stove and cook on low-high heat for 2 hours. For a low setting, it takes about 4 to 5 hours until the beans are cooked through and soft.

Step 5: Remove the ham shanks and take all the meat using two forks.

Step 6: Return the shredded meat to the crockpot and add in brown sugar.

Step 7: Stir using a ladle until well-mixed.

Step 8: Remove the crockpot from the stove and turn off the heat.

Step 9: Serve hot and enjoy!
