3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Frosting

3 cups confectioners’ sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons vanilla extract
9 tablespoons evaporated milk, or more as needed
6 cups confectioners’ sugar, or more as needed

How to make Old Fashioned Butter Cookies with Butter Frosting

Step 1: In a bowl, beat a cup of softened butter with white sugar until creamy. Add in the egg, whole milk, and 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Beat until smooth.

Step 2: In another bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3: To make a smooth dough, slowly mix in the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Refrigerate to chill for at least 2 to 3 hours.

Step 4: Ready the oven. Preheat it to 400 degrees F or 200 degrees C. Generously dust with flour a pastry cloth or kitchen towel.

Step 5: On the prepared pastry cloth, place the dough and divide it into thirds and roll into 1/8-inch thick. Using cookie cutters, cut shapes out of the rolled dough and put them onto ungreased baking sheets.

Step 6: Place inside the preheated oven and bake for 5 to 8 minutes or until the cookies are almost brown.

Step 7: Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool first on the baking sheets for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Step 8: To make the frosting, place a cup of softened butter, 3 cups confectioners’ sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoons vanilla extract, and evaporated milk in a bowl. Beat until smooth. Slowly stir 6 cups of the confectioners’ sugar into mixture until incorporated. Vigorously beat the frosting until fluffy and mix in the evaporated milk or confectioners’ sugar if necessary until you reach your desired consistency.

Step 9: Frost the cooled cookies. Enjoy!
