This Hungarian Goulash is my ultimate comfort food! I always cook this on weekends when everyone is around. You are so in for a treat! Serve this with some bread or rice, and you have yourself a meal to remember. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
1 c diced tomatoes, canned
1 tsp salt
¼ c flour
2 tsp butter or lard (preferred)
1 tsp caraway seeds
2 c beef broth or water
1 ½ lb. stewing beef, trimmed and cut into 1-inch cubes
2 tbsp paprika
2 medium onions
¼ tsp pepper
Optional Ingredients:
3 c potatoes, optional
1 ½ c carrots, optional
Directions:
Place a large pot on the stove and turn the heat to medium. Add butter and allow it to melt.
Add the onion into the pot, then sauté for a few minutes until soft.
Add paprika and caraway seeds, then stir until well blended.
Add flour into a mixing bowl, then add the beef cubes in it. Toss until fully coated.
Add the coated beef cubes into the pot, then sear each side for about 2 minutes just until brown.
Add 1/4 cup of beef broth, then scrape the bottom of the pot to deglaze it. Stir everything until well blended.
Add the carrots, tomatoes, salt, pepper, the rest of the broth, and potatoes. Stir and allow the mixture to boil.
Turn the heat down to medium-low, then cover the pot with the lid. Simmer everything for about 1 1/2 hours or 2 hours.
Serve and enjoy!
Notes:
You can skip the veggies, but I recommend adding them. They give extra flavors and color to the dish.
Place any leftovers in an airtight container, then put them in the fridge. Reheat for a few minutes before serving again.
