How to make Hamburger Steak with Onion and Gravy
STEAK:
Step 1: Mix the shredded frozen butter with minced onions, mustard, meat, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well until combined.
Step 2: Into evenly sized oval steak, shape the mixture. Place in the fridge for about 15 minutes to chill. Then, season all sides with salt and pepper.
Step 3: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the hamburger steaks to the pan and sear for about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Set aside when done.
GRAVY:
Step 4: Adjust the heat to medium-low and add 2 tbsp butter to the now-empty pan. Let it melt, then add the onions. Cook the onions for about 15 to 20 minutes or until tender and start to caramelize.
Step 5: To the skillet, add the chicken broth, beef broth, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. To lift any remnants, run a silicone spatula along the bottom of the pan.
Step 6: Whisk the cornstarch and cold water until well blended. Once the gravy is boiling, stir in the cornstarch mixture, then adjust the heat to medium-low, stirring constantly.
Step 7: Return the steak to the pan. Put the lid on and continue to cook for another 10 minutes or until the steak is completely cooked and the internal temperature of the steak reaches 160 degrees. In the end, add the rest of the 1 tbsp cold butter.
Step 8: Spoon the gravy over the steak and sprinkle everything with parsley. Serve the hamburger steak with onion and gravy over mashed potatoes and roasted carrots. Enjoy!
Tips:
1. You can top the meat with cooked and crumbled bacon.
2. If desired, you can top the steaks with Swiss cheese and let it melt before serving.
3. You can also add mushrooms to the gravy.
4. To increase the amount of gravy and if you prefer a creamier consistency, stir in a can of cream of mushroom soup at the end with room temperature sour cream.
