INGREDIENTS
1 garlic clove, minced
1 lb lean ground beef
1 large yellow onion, chopped
2 c. low sodium beef broth
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 8-ounce can of tomato sauce
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp seasoned salt
1/2 tsp garlic powder
2 c. shredded cheddar cheese
½ c. heavy cream
salt and pepper, to taste
2 c. pasta shells (or use elbow pasta)
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE HAMBURGER HELPER
Step 1: Cook the ground beef in a large saute pan with a lid over medium-high heat until browned. Set aside when done, leaving 2 tbsp of grease in the pan.
Step 2: In the same pan, saute the onion for about 5 minutes. In the last 30 seconds, add the garlic.
Step 3: Stir in the flour and cook for another minute. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and bring everything to a boil.
Step 4: In the pan, add the tomato sauce along with the Italian seasoning, seasoned salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and pasta. Mix well. Put the lid on and cook for an additional 12 to 15 minutes or until the pasta is done, stirring often.
Step 5: Next, add the cream and cheese. Mix well until the cheese has melted. Return the ground beef and cook further. This takes another 2 to 3 minutes to reheat the ground beef.
Step 6: Remove from the heat when done, and serve the homemade hamburger helper right away. Enjoy!
NOTES:
This is a rich dish. If needed, add a little more water or beef broth.
For this recipe, you can also use other varieties of pasta as long as it is a similar size for the liquid ratio to work.
